A court has sentenced the man convicted of raping and murdering a three-year-old girl in Nasarapur, Pune district, Maharashtra, to death. Sixty-five-year-old Bhimrao Kamble was found guilty of rape and murder.
Pune District and Sessions Court Judge S.R. Salunkhe sentenced convicted Bhimrao Kamble to death by hanging.
In its arguments, the prosecution cited 12 significant Supreme Court judgments related to such cases, including the contention that this case falls under the category of the "rarest of rare" cases as defined by the Supreme Court.
Considering the nature of the crime and the brutality involved, the judge held Kamble guilty and stated that the accused did not deserve any leniency or a lesser sentence. The judge also observed that the injuries on the victim's body were sufficient to establish the extreme brutality of the crime.
Taking into account a previously registered sexual assault case against Kamble, the court said that he was aware of the law and had shown no remorse for his actions throughout the trial. The court delivered its verdict within two months. The convict had committed the crime on May 1.
The police filed the chargesheet within 15 days of the incident. Charges were framed on May 28, and final arguments concluded on June 21.
It may be recalled that on May 1, Bhor taluka in Pune was shaken by this shocking crime. The 65-year-old convict, Bhimrao Kamble, brutally murdered the young girl. According to reports, he killed her by crushing her with a stone.
The incident came to light when the girl went missing in the afternoon, prompting her family to search for her everywhere. During the search, her mutilated, blood-soaked body was found.
CCTV footage from the area showed Kamble taking the girl with him, helping the police identify and take him into custody.
