In response to the recent terrorist attacks, Pakistan launched a military operation near the Afghanistan border on Sunday.
According to the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’, more than 30 people were killed in the operation. Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the ground operation and airstrikes were pre-planned based on intelligence gathered by security agencies.
Tarar said the action was taken following terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Karachi. On Saturday night, militants attacked the Sindh Rangers headquarters in Karachi's Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. According to Sindh Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, the attackers rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into the main entrance, after which heavy gunfire erupted inside the compound. Initial investigations could not determine whether the vehicle had exploded.
Three Pakistani paramilitary personnel and three attackers were killed in the Karachi attack, while one soldier was injured and admitted to a hospital. Following the incident, the Special Security Unit (SSU), Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF), Rangers, and police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation.
According to an Al Jazeera report, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar claimed responsibility for the attack. The group is considered a splinter faction of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The organization claimed that nine of its fighters participated in the assault.
Over the past few years, terrorist attacks targeting Pakistan's security forces and police have increased steadily. The Pakistani government blames Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated groups for these incidents. Although TTP is a separate organization from the Afghan Taliban, the two are said to have close ties. Since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021, tensions along the border between the two countries have remained high.
Pakistan accuses Afghanistan's Taliban government of providing safe haven to TTP militants, while the Kabul administration has consistently denied these allegations.
Afghanistan claims that Pakistan carried out airstrikes on June 10 in the provinces of Khost, Kunar, and Paktika, killing 13 people. The dead reportedly included 11 children, one woman, and one elderly person. Pakistan, however, denied the allegations, stating that its operation was limited to militant hideouts and that no civilian areas were targeted.
