The monsoon has once again shown its fierce side in Mumbai. After heavy overnight rainfall, several parts of the city have been submerged under water. Waterlogging on roads has disrupted traffic, and the Andheri Subway—one of Mumbai’s busiest routes—has been completely closed to traffic due to flooding. People may face significant difficulties leaving their homes and reaching their workplaces.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Andheri Subway was closed to traffic as a precaution from 1:45 a.m. after severe waterlogging. Police have also been deployed outside the subway to prevent any untoward incidents. The Andheri Subway is a key route connecting Mumbai’s eastern and western suburbs, used daily by thousands of vehicles and commuters. However, waterlogging at this location has been a persistent problem during the monsoon season.
The heaviest impact of the continuous rainfall has been seen in areas such as Andheri, Bandra, Khar, Malad, Goregaon, Juhu, and Versova. Images have emerged showing waterlogged streets in several low-lying parts of the city. Waterlogging has also slowed traffic on the Western Express Highway, causing congestion.
While the heavy rain has brought relief from the heat and humidity for Mumbai residents, it is likely to create difficulties for people traveling to work early in the morning. Waterlogging and traffic congestion are expected to disrupt daily commuting.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai and nearby areas for today as well. According to the department, thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall are likely across Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra. Notably, this year's monsoon arrived in Mumbai 13 days later than usual, but the city has since been experiencing continuous spells of heavy rain.
