The Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday met the Election Commission to respond to claims made by the rival faction led by dissident leader Ritabrata Banerjee regarding the tenure of the party's national executive committee.
The TMC delegation asserted that the tenure of the party's national executive committee is five years and remains valid until 2027. The rival faction, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, has claimed that the committee's term is only three years and expired in 2025.
The delegation representing the Mamata Banerjee-led faction included Members of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, and Sagarika Ghose. The party is currently witnessing a dispute between the two factions, with both claiming to be the legitimate Trinamool Congress.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting with the Election Commission, Kalyan Banerjee said, "We have submitted our detailed response to the Election Commission regarding the representation filed by the so-called TMC secretary, Ritabrata Banerjee."
He said the rival faction had argued that the tenure of the Trinamool Congress executive committee and national executive committee is only three years. According to that claim, the committees constituted in 2022 completed their term in 2025.
Banerjee, however, said the party's constitution had been amended to extend the tenure of the executive committee to five years. He added that the amendment had been formally communicated to the Election Commission, which had subsequently directed that internal party elections be conducted within the revised five-year term.
He further stated that since the last organisational elections were held in 2022, the tenure of the party's executive committee and national executive committee will continue until 2027 in accordance with the amended party constitution.
