Kolkata, Aug 23 (IANS) Tension has spread in Baranagar area in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district over the discovery of body of a woman hanging in her house on Sunday, officials said.
The woman's in-laws claimed that the woman committed suicide.
However, a section of the locals are reluctant to accept that claim. They vented their anger against the deceased's husband and in-laws.
The locals took to the streets to mark their protest.
The situation gradually grew out of hand following which police forces were deployed in the area to control the situation.
It is alleged that the police resorted to cane charge to bring the situation under control.
According to local sources, as soon as the news spread that the hanging body of Riya Pal, the wife of Manas Das, a resident of Ashokgarh area of Baranagar, was found in their house, a mob started gathering in front of Manas's house.
After receiving the news about the incident, the police reached the spot.
After initial police questioning, they arrested Riya's husband and mother-in-law.
Tension spread while they were being taken to the police station.
The woman's neighbours blocked the police car and protested demanding punishment for the accused.
The local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership was also present.
More police personnel reached the spot after receiving the information.
The police recovered the deceased woman's body and sent it to the hospital for autopsy.
The alleged accused Manas claimed that he could not contact his wife for a long time and when he returned home, he found the door locked from the inside, following which he looked out of the window and saw his wife hanging from the ceiling.
The police came and broke the door open and recovered the body.
The police are investigating whether the woman really committed suicide or if there was some other reason behind it.
"A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law. Investigation is on. The real cause of the death will be ascertained once the autopsy report comes. Meanwhile, the situation in Baranagar is normal," a senior officer of Barrackpore Police Commissionerate said.
