The Congress party claimed on Thursday that Pakistan's role in the agreement between the United States and Iran is a setback to the Narendra Modi government's foreign policy, and "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's continuous appeasement of US President Donald Trump is shameful and anti-national."
Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also stated that the signed Memorandum of Understanding brings several achievements for Iran and is also a defeat for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Jairam Ramesh posted on X: "The 14-point Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran has now been officially released. Naming this agreement the 'Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)' itself is a clear indication of Pakistan's rising regional stature and growing global influence."
He noted that Pakistan is the same country that was almost isolated on the global stage by Dr. Manmohan Singh after the November 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.Ramesh claimed that this is a serious setback to both the direction and style of Prime Minister Modi's foreign policy.
The Congress leader said, "Pakistan has now become deeply embedded in the geopolitical and security structure of West Asia, which could have serious and long-term implications for India."
Ramesh added, "If this MoU is implemented in both letter and spirit, it will be a major step forward. However, there is also a possibility that it may turn into a 'Memorandum of Misunderstanding' for both sides. For now, it can only be said that the next 60 days will be extremely important."
The Congress General Secretary said, "This MoU has brought extremely important and somewhat unexpected gains for Iran. Iran has demonstrated its firmness and resilience. The GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, which bore the full brunt of Iran's retaliatory attacks, have welcomed this MoU with caution. But they will undoubtedly reconsider their relations with other countries."
According to him, this MoU represents a clear defeat for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although he may still try to sabotage it in various ways.
Ramesh said, "Benjamin Netanyahu has become isolated internationally. Even President Trump has publicly expressed his displeasure and disappointment with him. Only Prime Minister Modi has remained steadfast in supporting Netanyahu's actions across the region, including in Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank. This blind devotion of Modi towards Israel is forcing our country to pay a heavy price."
The Congress leader stated that this MoU is a serious setback for the United States, which, along with Israel, had launched a war against Iran on February 28, 2026, with maximum objectives, but failed to achieve those goals.
He claimed, "Once again, the limits of military power have been exposed. The latest example of Prime Minister Modi's continuous policy of appeasement towards Trump was seen on Wednesday night when the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued an official statement on the Trump-Modi bilateral meeting. This appeasement is shameful and, in reality, anti-national."
