Bhubaneswar, 06 July : The Odisha School and Mass Education Department has announced a revised student assessment framework for government and government-aided schools, introducing four mandatory evaluations each academic year for students of Classes III to VIII.
According to a notification issued by the Directorate of Teacher Education and the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), the academic session will now be divided into two terms. The first term will run from April to September, while the second term will cover October to March.
Under the new evaluation system, students will appear for two Formative Assessments (FA1 and FA2) and two Summative Assessments (SA1 and SA2) during the academic year. Each Formative Assessment will carry 25 marks per subject, while each Summative Assessment will be conducted for 50 marks per subject.
The revised framework aims to strengthen continuous and comprehensive evaluation by combining periodic assessments with term-end examinations, enabling schools to monitor students' academic progress more effectively throughout the year.
For students of Classes I and II, the department has introduced a Learning Ladder Register to record each child's progress on a monthly basis. The register will help teachers assess learning outcomes, monitor skill development, and plan appropriate instructional support.
The department has also reiterated that no formal written examinations will be conducted for Classes I and II. Instead, teachers will evaluate students through regular classroom observations, focusing on their participation, engagement, and performance in everyday learning activities.
