Amreli/New Delhi : The Amreli Cyber Crime Police recovered Rs 11 lakh after cracking a cyber fraud case involving a Sydney-based Indian national, within weeks, in coordination with the police and the banking system.
The money was returned to Saurabh Jolly, an Indian resident living in Sydney, Australia, after he approached the Amreli Police by email in June regarding a payment he had made for the purchase of gold that was never delivered.
According to Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat, Jolly, originally from New Delhi, had transferred Rs 11 lakh in April to a person based in Amreli for the purchase of gold.
Despite making the payment, he did not receive the gold and, being overseas, was uncertain whether his complaint could be resolved promptly.
"As soon as we received his complaint via email, we promptly launched an investigation and assured him of our full support. Our Cyber Crime Team coordinated with the concerned bank, pursued the matter continuously, and kept the complainant informed throughout the investigation," Kharat said.
The investigation resulted in the recovery of the full Rs 11 lakh, which was credited back to Jolly's bank account.
Inspector Kamlesh Khatana of the Amreli Cyber Crime Police said that the recipient of the money was an Amreli resident, prompting Jolly to approach the district police despite being in Australia.
"Saurabh Jolly transferred the amount for the purchase of gold in April 2026, but the seller failed to deliver the gold. In June, Jolly approached the Amreli Police via email because the recipient of the money was a resident of Amreli. We pursued the matter and asked the recipient to return the money. He eventually refunded the entire amount in July," Khatana said.
Jolly, in a letter addressed to the Superintendent of Police, thanked the police for their handling of the case.
"I never felt disconnected from the investigation despite being thousands of kilometres away, and the team's prompt communication, patience in answering my queries and systematic approach was building my confidence," he said.
He also said that the experience strengthened his confidence in the policing system and described the Amreli Cyber Crime Team's work as an example of "how prompt and committed policing can help restore public trust while addressing the growing challenge of cyber fraud".
The case comes as Gujarat Police have been directed by Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi to provide immediate assistance to victims of fraud and make every possible effort to recover and protect their hard-earned money.
