Himachal CM announces Rs 1 crore to cricketer Renuka Thakur

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has announced a cash prize of Rs 1 crore for international cricketer Renuka Thakur, who hails from the Rohru area of Shimla district and was part of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team that created history by winning the 2025 Women’s World Cup.

The Chief Minister personally spoke to Renuka Thakur over the phone and extended his congratulations to her and the entire Indian squad for their remarkable performance.

He said that the entire nation was proud of the team’s achievement, as it marked India’s maiden Women’s World Cup title.

The Indian team lifted the trophy after defeating South Africa in the final match held in Mumbai on Sunday evening.

Sukhu said he had watched both the semi-final and final matches and was deeply impressed by the grit and teamwork displayed by the players. He added that Renuka Thakur’s exceptional performance and dedication had brought immense pride to Himachal Pradesh and served as an inspiration for the youth, particularly girls aspiring to excel in sports.

The Chief Minister said that the state government is committed to promoting sports and will continue to encourage talented athletes through better infrastructure, financial incentives, and training opportunities.

He reiterated that the success of players like Renuka Thakur reflects the growing sporting potential of Himachal Pradesh and the government’s efforts to nurture it.

The announcement of the Rs 1 crore reward has been widely appreciated by sports enthusiasts across the state, who lauded the government’s gesture of recognising and honouring homegrown talent.
